3 Tips for Documenting a Car Accident

Last updated 3 months ago

When you are involved in an automobile accident, your first concern should be for your health and that of others involved in the crash. It is also important to document any damage that has been caused by the accident in order to be prepared when filing insurance and personal injury claims:

  • Receive a Medical Evaluation

If you have any suspicion that you or one of your passengers have been injured, make sure a medical evaluation is performed right away.  Document any injuries sustained by taking pictures throughout the recovery process. No matter what the extent of the damage is, you should keep copies of all medical reports for injuries caused by the accident.

  • Take Pictures of Your Vehicle

Photograph all of the damage that the accident caused to your vehicle. If you do not have a camera handy, ask a friend to bring one to the scene of the car accident. Take some pictures that show the entire car as well some that clearly show the details of the damage at close range. You may also want to take pictures of the damage caused to any other vehicles involved.

  • Record Details

While you are still at the scene of the accident, take a moment to recall and record the moments before the crash. Write down the speed you were going, any distractions you may have experienced, how you believe the accident occurred, and any descriptions of the accident given by other parties involved or by witnesses. Take pictures of the scene of the accident and document the road conditions as they were during the crash. In the days following the accident, obtain a copy of the police report for your own records.

Being involved in an automobile accident can be an emotionally and physically draining experience. By documenting the accident’s details, you will make it easier to receive the proper compensation afterwards. For more information, call Santilli Law Group at (312) 854-0943.
