Who Is Eligible for Social Security Disability Benefits?

Last updated 1 year ago

Unfortunately, illnesses can have a devastating emotional and financial impact on working Americans and their families. In many instances, these workers are eligible to collect Social Security disability benefits (SSDI). For more information on what makes an individual eligible to receive such benefits, read on:

  • Conditions

There are two types of conditions under which workers may apply for SSDI: long-lasting medical conditions that are expected to keep an employee from working for more than one year and terminal illnesses. Depending on your age and the length of time for which you worked under Social Security, you may qualify for SSDI.

  • Requirements

Two earnings tests, one which looks at your age at the time your illness disabled you from working and another that examines the duration of time for which you were working and paying into the Social Security system, must be met to qualify for disability benefits. A workers’ compensation lawyer can help you determine whether you are likely to qualify.

  • Exceptions

In some cases, such as with blindness, the duration of work requirement is all that must be met. A work injury attorney who is familiar with the rules put forth by the U.S. Social Security Administration can help you determine your eligibility.
